Day 0: Departure

2012.10.29 Mon.

Today is the day.
I was so excited and nervous that I slashed my forehead as I was trying to look nice. I stopped using that brand-new razor after it left a few more cuts around my lips and nose. Excitement going overboard.

My parents helpfully gave me a ride to Narita Airport.
I never get used to waving goodbye, especially when I'm the one who is seen off.
My first flight took me to Guangzhou, and it was my first time stepping on the mainland China.
I didn't have time to think about that fact, though, because something more exciting took place and out of nowhere: I ran into my friend's mom in the bathroom of Guangzhou Airport. What are the possibilities of finding someone you know in a random bathroom outside your own country? Her and her husband, both of whom I know well, happened to be there for a tradeshow in town. I felt relief seeing and talking to them, even only for a brief time.

It's such a small world, indeed.
Every step I take leads to unknown and surprising outcome, and that's what makes life so interesing and fascinating.

My second flight left Guangzhou in a rainstorm, and on to Melbourne.

The eve of departure

2012.10.28 Sun.

So here I am, still packing but getting tired and drowsy after clearing out my apartment and packing.
I owe a great big thanks to my friends and ex-coworkers who gave me a pat on the back,
to my closer friends who tried to go out for a drink with me before I'd leave,
and to my family and best friends who supported me in every possible way.

I was fortunate enough to go see Kawagoe Festival, Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Sky Tree recently: a timely opportunity that had to be laid in front of me just before I leave Japan. Coincidence though it may seem, I still believe things happen for a reason, and this opportunity just had to show up at this timing.

I'm ready to take off to a whole new world, and I hope the new world is ready for me.

Carpe Diem!!

Three more days to go!

One more week to go!!

Three more weeks to go!

2012.10.9 Tue.

Three weeks of temp job has finished last week, and now I've got three more weeks to go before leaving for Australia.
I had a chance to go bungy jumping in Minakami (Gunma Prefecture) this past weekend, and also had a band practice playing "Stand By Me" just for fun. Trail running in Hakone mountains topped off the three-day weekend, and now my legs are sore but with a pleasant fatigue.

In the coming three weeks, I will have to get rid of everything except for things I will take with me to Australia and those I want to keep for the rest of my life (like yearbooks and letters and whatnot). I've changed apartments three times in the past 8 years, but this time it's all so different. Furnitures, clothing, books, bags, CDs and DVDs, all the records and mementos must go.

Fingers crossed for my successful clean-up. This will be a great opportunity for me to shed all the unnecessary belongings that I've been keeping just because.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing myself without "attachments."

A month and a half to go!

2012.9.15 Sat.

Two weeks of self-unemployment has passed, and I must say I'm enjoying it to the fullest.

I've been going out drinking sake, met with ex-coworkers for lunch, went to Nagoya to see my cousins (and drink sake with them), went out drinking sake again, and only sometimes did I check information on Australia and Working Holiday.

NO PROGRESS WHATSOEVER, period.

I know how they say "well begun is half done," and that being well-prepared will surely save my day later on. The bad procrastinator-side of me is apparently taking control.
But at the same time, I keep telling myself that my friends and good sake are things I will most definitely miss once I get to Australia, so why not take advantage of my free time now?

Happy go lucky!

Two more months to go!

2012.9.1 Sat.

It's been 5 months since my last entry, and things have been moving forward...in most cases.

1. Departure date set at the end of October;
2. Bought a suitcase, so blue-sky blue that I fell in love in an instant;
3. Bought a laptop PC, or an ultrabook as they call it. This will be my mate and my means to stay in touch with everything while I'm on the road;
4. And I'm officially self-unemployed as of today!

I have 2 months left before I clean out everything in my current room and in my parents' place.

Two months seem long enough (or even too long to be out of job), but I know it'll pass by so quickly and no time should go wasted.

Time to start real prep for the trip!

2012/03/20

Current Status: 7 Months to Go

March 20, 2012

It's been 10 days since my Introduction, and so far, my prep has been going well:
- I have applied for Woking Holiday Visa (WH Subclass 417) which, to my astonishment, was granted within 0.5 day;
- I have told my family about my intention to stay in Australia for a year, which, again to my astonishment, was taken in within 5 minutes of my going, "Hey Mom and Dad...there's something I wanna tell you..."; and
- I bought a guidebook!

So, Visa obtained, passport good, family agreed (or more like gave up), friends backing me up, me studying Australia and its attractions, and now what else?

...Oh yes, dinero.
Although this is WORKING Holiday, I'll need some money at hand to, of course, get a flight ticket, and to start my life there from scratch.

I've got 7 more months to go, and hopefully it's enough for me to get financially ready for my OZ fun.

Introduction

March 11, 2012

Hello and Welcome to my blog.
This is my personal record of my personal venture which I proudly named "Project 31."
I am planning on going to Australia in November this year to make Working Holiday, and I shall be spending the good part of my 31-year-old year there (hence my project title).

Exactly one year ago, Northeastern part of Japan was hit by a massive M9.0 earthquake followed by waves of tsunami that claimed nearly 20,000 lives. This aweful, tragic catastrophe affected millions of lives since then, and it still is.
If this catastrophe has taught me anything, it's the reaffirmation of the Zen idea that, "nothing stays the same."
As I always tell myself, whatever happens happens and it happens for a reason. I cannot, and must not, take anything for granted as nothing is guaranteed in life. So, I decided that I should follow my instincts and make it happen if there's an urge I just cannot drop. (You know me too well if you say I've always been like that anyways. Hush hush ;-)

The single creed I follow throughout this journey is: CARPE DIEM.
Seize the day, because life is short.
Seize the day, because I know I'll regret not trying it when I could.
Seize the day, because it'll make you realize what you really want.
Seize the day, because you never know what tomorrow brings.
Be grateful, be responsible, be compassionate, be open-minded, be attentive, be friends, and be yourself, at your own risk.

Welcome again to my blog and my journey.
I hope you'd enjoy the ride as much as I will.
