【Boxing Day ボクシング・デー】
オーストラリアの国技であるボクシングを国民全員で楽しむ日。
1956年、メルボルンでオリンピック夏季大会が開催されたのを機に制定。
・・・なんちゃって。
ボクシング・デーとは元々、クリスマスの日にも働いてくれた使用人や、クリスマスギフトやカードを配達してくれた郵便屋さんに感謝の意を表する日だそうで、使用人にはボーナスやプレゼント、食事の残り物などを持たせて家族のもとへ帰らせ、郵便屋さんには箱に入れたギフトを贈るのだとか。また、教会に設置した寄付箱を開けて、集めた施しを貧しい人たちに配るという習わしも、ボクシング・デーの由来とされる説の一つです。
そんな起源はどこへやら、今のボクシング・デーとは何かと問われたら、「クリスマス翌日の大セール」というのが正しい答えです。
イブにどんちゃん騒ぎして、パーティ疲れも手伝って本番は自宅で家族とゆっくり、その翌日にはセール品目当てに街へ繰り出すというこの流れ、日本の正月に似ている気がします。特に最近は日本でもカウントダウンパーティがメジャーになってきていますし、初売りセールの開催日が繰り上がってきていることもあり、全く違和感のない行動パターンかなと。
普段は人混みなどできるだけ回避したいところですが、「人に挟まれて動くのもままならない」という混雑ぶりをこの目で見たくて、ボクシング・デーにはシティに行ってみようと決めていました。しかし、のんびり午後3時にシティに着いてみたら、確かに混んではいるものの動けないほどではなく。どうやら、毎年のようにニュースに取り上げられる混雑ぶりは、開店前後に見られるようです。残念。
確かに、街中はそこそこ混雑していましたし、普段よりもストリートパフォーマーや物乞いが多かった気がします。しかし、２ヵ月前に行った川越祭りや、ほぼ１年前に行ったインドはブッダガヤの混雑っぷりに比べたら、まだまだ可愛いもんです。土曜夕方の新宿や渋谷と大して変わりません。混雑度に関しては、観察時刻の設定ミスもあり、やや期待外れに終わりました。
そんなこんなで、25日のクリスマスと26日のボクシング・デーをのんびり過ごし、今日からまたバイト開始です。気温は31度、仕事前にお洗濯します。

Unfortunately, I failed to witness yesterday's Boxing Day craze in Melbourne CBD, as I reached there a bit too late...like 3 in the afternoon. So, by the time I started strolling along Swanston Street towards China Town, people weren't really rushing in and out with the unyielding determination to purchase whatever they had their eyes on, but rather enjoying a walk with their families and friends.
This Boxing Day shopping spree is, I reckon, quite similar to what we see in Japan; except it happens after the New Year's Day in Japan. As a matter of fact, the whole chain of events from partying out on the eve, staying home quietly (and recovering from hangover) on the main day, to dashing out into town for a huge sale the day after is quite exactly what happens around the New Year's in Japan. It's also similar how many aspects of this cultural/religious event have been largely commercialized, turned into mere formality, or simply disappeared. ("Osechi," or traditional New Year's dishes in Japan, is a good example: it's sold ready-made at department stores or even convenience stores, the content of Osechi doesn't necessarily follow the tradition anymore, or it is unseen among not too small number of households.)
At least I managed to take a peek at what Melbourne's Boxing Day is like, and all in all, I had great Christmas and Boxing Day. Time to get back to usual work shifts!
